Citizen Gorgeous is the second full-length album from producer / songwriter, Clawman. On past efforts, Clawman has focused on lush arrangements and lo-fi soundscapes to accentuate emotional gravitas, but this record steps in a more electronic direction, taking inspiration from Kraftwerk, Metalocalypse, vodka, and life after death.
Artist’s Statement:
Citizen Gorgeous is mostly instrumental – but when there are lyrics, they reflect some of the fucked up trauma I experienced as a young struggling musician. In particular, the song, “Because You’re Dead,” makes repeated reference to C.S. Lewis’s book on mourning, A Grief Observed. The more socially conscious, “Bad Mood Baby,” is an indictment of pious hucksters and prayers for tithes – owing some credit to the influence of the band, Suicide. Citizen Gorgeous may have dark undertones, but I swear, I made this record because of vodka and Metalocalypse — after years of involvement within punk, folk, and whiskey driven projects, the approach to making music with programmed beats and cold clear beverages felt like a real departure.
Bio:
Clawman is the production alias of song-writer, David Rogers-Berry. In 2016, Rogers-Berry launched a label imprint, Imaginator Records; Citizen Gorgeous is Imaginator’s 4th release with two more from other bands coming by the end of 2017. Rogers-Berry spent the last 10+ years as the drummer of gothic-Americana band, o’death – who are currently recording their fifth studio album.
